Alan is a first class houndsman and has more experience and better dogs than anyone I’ve ever hunted with. I had a Nevada bear tag and had been chasing a bear multiple times with other houndsman and friend’s dogs. We could never get on this bear, he kept outrunning the dogs and gave us the slip multiple times. We knew he was a bruiser by the size of the track and from a couple glimpses we caught, but he had literally outran and outsmarted us every time.
I got to know Alan through some friends in California and Alan was nice enough to come give this boar a shot, within days we had cut his track again and were back on the bear. You could tell immediately Alan and his dogs were different than other guys. The difference was in experience, both the dogs and Alan had been on many bears and lions before, and the difference showed. We were able to cut off on this bear and finally the dogs were good enough to get him bayed up. We hustled up the mountain and got in close. The bear was too big to tree, and before we got up to him, Alan told me that once the dogs felt that we were right behind them, they would part and give a shooting lane. I about half believed the dogs had enough hunting sense to “feel” us behind and part.

Sure enough and as if they knew the plan all along, right when we got up close, the dogs that had the bear bayed up split perfectly and gave me a great shooting lane and the rest was history. We harvested a 10 year old boar which is one of the largest ever killed in Nevada and had just under a 21’’ skull. Making it eligible for Boone and Crockett all time. On the way down the mountain, the dogs hadn’t had enough and ended up treeing another small boar which we got some great pictures of. You can tell with the guys that love hunting with dogs, that it is not about the killing at the tree, but about the work for the dogs. Alan is as true of a houndsman as you’ll ever meet.
